Education is the key to all doors of sucess

It takes the whole village to raise a child. The National Book Week is an event celebrated all across the country. This year it was held from 3-8 September 2012. Schools, Municipalities and libraries all hosted diverse and unique activities to reinforce the fun of reading and books. The South African Book Development Council (SABDC) initiative is in proud association with the Department of Arts and Culture. Read more

The title for the event was "Read a book, share a book", and it aimed at promoting the joy of reading among South Africans of all ages. The main event was hosted in the Eastern Cape this year from the 6-8 September 2012 in Port Elizabeth(now known as Nelson Mandela Bay). It is very nice to see that even our celebrities are making this event one of their first priorities, as they are our role models and have a way of persuading us to do certain things.

National Book week is slowly but surely becoming a new platform for people to voluntarily help in making sure that all South Africans get a chance to be educated. I think the National Book Week is fast becoming a premier reading event and a Corporate Social Investment (CSI) tool for the book industry. This event gives a chance to each individual to lend a helping hand, showing humanity (Ubuntu) by participating and making sure that more and more South Africans can read and write.

This initiative also creates awareness of every individuals indispensive role in society. If you did not know about this event its unfortunate for you because it has passed already, but you can look up for it again next year. South Africans lets all try to make a difference in other peoples lives especially through education, as we all know that its the only key to success.

  1. I wish National Book Week programme happen everyday to improve people reading skills. Did you know South Africa in 2009 was out off top 50 "best readers in the world", come on we deserve o be in the top 5. National Book Week was established because of that embarrasement.

  2. this is a great initiative done by sabdc to ensure that children gain reading skills at the early stage, and i would be a great idea if they can spread this programme in all schools across the country including those in rural areas.

    1. I definately agree with you Mthokozisi, infact the schools in rural areas are the ones who are in desparate need of such events compared to the ones that are in the urban areas.

  3. It's a good thing that there's such a programme running, many people (children) don't have the opportunity that this programme gives.

  4. Its a good initiative, plus today's generation hardly reads. So hopefully this will also encourage others to start reading as well.

    1. But we must not forget that some people dont read just because they actually dont have anything to read not that they are lazy to do so, just like the saga that happened in Limpopo where books were never deliverd for kids to read.

    1. If only a lot of private companies could support this initiative, then a lot of people will also be encouraged to read because the material will be there.

  8. Certain initiativs are for a good cause and they are what makes a better South Africa. It is unpleasant to see it being done once a year but fortunatelty those who attend benefit a lot.
