Miss world and the power of social media

A persons image and reputation is very important, as it has an impact on how people see and respect you as an individual. Your image can either break you or pave a way of success for you in the industry in which you are in. Your reputation has a way of determining your future in one way or the other. A big break turns into a nightmare for the 23 year old Wen Xioa Yu from Liaoning, China. She was crowned Miss World on the 18 August 2012.

This spectacular event was held in Ordos, China in the City of Mangolian. Wen became the center of controversy since she was crowned Miss World 2012. Her desire for the title was "When I was young I felt very lucky because so many people helped me, and I hope in the future I can help more children to feel lucky", said Wen. Sadly just after she was announced Miss World, the Social media networks like Facebook, Twitter and Miss China related articles went viral, as many people opposed her winning. Critics accused her of being rigged. Comments from people also pointed out that she won only because of favouritism. Read more

AN UNFORGETTABLE MOMENT: Miss World 2012
Wen Xioa Yu, from China

Contestants for Miss World were given activities to do in order to gain points, and Wen did  not even win any of those activities. The activities and the winners for those activities were as follows:
  • Modelling clothes for 1436, won by South Sudan
  • Beach fashion, won by Wales
  • Social media activity (to post photos), won by India
  • Sports woman, won by Sweden

People complained that this is the second time Miss World was held in China and even the last time they hosted the event in 2007, the winner was from their home town. What kind of an incident is that? Another comment made it clear that the judges were no fair and wise in choosing the winner. People are saying there is no more credibility, fairness and transparency in such events. Judges should be impartial, free from prejudice, and not be affected (sic) by the screaming crowd, which the judges of Miss World 2012 did not have any of the above mentioned.

I just wonder how Miss Yu feels about these opinions and criticisms after she thought she also deserved the title and gained it with hard work and determination. Will this affect her image in a good or bad way? Did she really deserve the title and if not, who is to blame for her winning of Miss World 2012???

  1. Yes when i also had a look at the event i found it really ockward for Yu to win and also it being in her own country. I found that very strange and think the judging may not of been fair.

    1. Well I guess a lot of people would agree with you there Michell, because remember it is also said that the same thing or incident happened in 2007.

  2. I don't believe she won out of favouritism. Just because Miss World was hosted in her country it doesn't necessarily mean it was because she's from that country. And one other thing i'm sure of is that the judges aren't all from China. So people must just leave her alone so that she can enjoy her crowning of Miss World. It has only been a week!!!

    1. If she won by fairness then she should be really left alone to enjoy her hard work consequenses. We can say whatever but I think some investigation has to be done so that her name is cleared, its not nice to be on everyone's lips for negative things.

  3. she won because she deserved to win.judges know what they are looking in each participant so i guess they found it in her.its not such bad idea to let her enjoy her victory surely that's all she wants to do now.

    1. Well I also guess so, this was suppose to be her big break and now people and the Media are turning it into a NIGHTMARE. The judges made their decision and there is no turning back now.

  6. I blame the judges. The activities were meant to determine the win but if people are just going to win because of favouritism then there is no need for them to do those activities.

    1. Well thats what I also thought, that the activities in a way can also determine the winner as there were points each contastant got for winnning each activity.

  7. I think she might have won out of favouritism because if you looked at her track record then you would see that other girls out shinned her. I just think that things could have been handled better to accomodate everyone.

    1. Well I think just like Dineo said, its only the judges who are to blame as they are the ones who made the final decision. Or its only them who can explain why she deserved to be crowned and not the others.

    1. Very funny Mthokozisi, i guess you will keep on wondering. I guess even if she did not deserve the crown but its not her fault that the judges had favouritism and chose her.

  10. Well... I do not think she won because of being Chinese, I think that the media is choosing to frame this matter in its own angle so that the public may see it as unfair. If there was corruption or unfairness then the matter must be investigated.

    1. What a nice point you have raised there, IF IT WAS FAVOURITISM THEN THE MATTER COULD HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED.The media has a way and the power to frame things in a way that they want.

    1. Social media has an amazing power that no one has control over. it has its advantages and disadvantages but i like the fact that it can be so transparent and immidiate.

  12. Being favoured by who?...the judges?Unbelievable...how can all the judges favour her?I do not think that the bad opinions and criticisms can affect her image because there is no a reliable information to prove these, I mean some testimony from the judges that "we" favoured the winner and she did not deserve a win.So the people who are saying this just have to deal wiht their personal issue against this young lady.

    1. Personal issues aside, i agree. And now that you mention it I also question myself on how can it be possible that all judges favour one person, i mean whats in it for them???

    1. Beauty with no brains doesn't work, the challenges that were given to them really showed that beauty pegeants are not only about beauty but brains and hard work too.

  17. Just because the ceremony was hosted in China, does not mean that it was favoritism that she actually won, she clearly was the best among her competitors.
